Creators: Warren Ellis & Jason Howard Read if you like: District 9, War of the Worlds Current Issue: 2 Ten years ago aliens invaded the planet Earth. Rather than an Independance Day knock-down-drag-out fight, this was more subtle yet infinitely creepier. What can only be described as colossal "trees" (hence the title) descended from the heavens and planted themselves in the Earth. Higher than the clouds, they embedded themselves into the landscape of towns, cities, mountain ranges all over the world and then proceeded to do...nothing. In the decade since people have lived with these mysterious monuments - from the Brazilian favelas to the Arctic circle, these extraterrestrial totem poles just blot the landscape; silent, unmoving monoliths. It's clear from the first two issues that writer Warren Ellis is playing the long game with this series. It's a slow burner, despite its outlandish premise, and Ellis moves the focus from country to country introducing us to half a dozen different storylines within the first issue. It's a rich world being built, as we discover how different cultures are using, dealing with, living with and ultimately moving on from these "trees". It's fascinating stuff, and only serves to get more intriguing as time goes on.
