10 Obscure Comic Book Titles That Deserve To Be Movies
3. Sky Pirates of Valendor - Everett Soares
High fantasy of the best sort, this combines just about every popular fantasty trope, from anthropomorphic animals to flying ships to swashbuckling pirates. The stories (yes plural - they are running both print and web-comics) focus on Tobin Manheim, captain of the Rogue's Revenge, and his various crew members as they adventure amidst floating continents within a mix of steampunk and high fantasy. With its deep character complexity alongside high adventure, it would be easy to set a whole slew of movies on Valendor. There is a temptation to talk about the details that take place within the compelling drama of it all; after all, the stories are very highly character-driven. However, the motivations that drive the characters are very real and tied to the amazingly-textured background of interlocking business structures created by the guilds that run the economy, and the social and political make-up of the various factions. As tedious as all that might sound, however, it all interlocks like perfect clockwork, driving everything along so well that the reader remains drawn along by all the action. The biggest challenge here is getting actors who can work well around CGI - that's the only way to cope with some of the fantastic elements herein. Tobin and Gearz are the most important to cast. Ben Chaplin could take a shot at Tobin, with all likelihood, and "Unforgettable" actress Poppy Montgomery is well-suited to play the full range of Gearz' role.
