4. Hawk And Dove

The groups of duos that went under the monikers of Hawk and Dove ended up living fairly tragic lives. This probably stemmed from being the avatars for the Lords of Chaos and Order. The original duo, brothers Don and Hank Hall, were created by Steve Ditko and Steve Skeates for Showcase #75. The more reasoned and nonviolent Don became Dove (Order) and the aggressive and violent Hank became Hawk (Chaos). Don was killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and Hawk went on alone, becoming increasingly violent.

Dawn Granger was soon given the powers of Dove and became a calming influence in Hank’s life for a time. That was until Dawn died at the hands of Monarch, causing a psychotic break. Actually, Hank was Monarch, killing and taking over for himself and later becoming the villain Extant, who himself was killed by Atom Smasher. Dawn was later found to have been in a coma and not dead, and her estranged sister Holly, an angry British-raised woman, became the new Hawk.

Holly’s heart was ripped out by a Black Lantern, and Hank was brought back to life by the White Lantern. Dawn and Hank were recruited by Zinda Blake to be on the Birds of Prey. The duo have had a few appearances around the margins of the DCU, and are a popular part of the Titans streaming series, but nothing like their former heights.
