8. Unforgettable Supporting Cast
In the world of Lovecraft, there are characters who will leave an indelible mark. Whether it's the likes of Rufus (pictured above) who has a learning disability but is also able to perceive things that most normal people don't, or Kinsey's friends Kavanagh, Jamal, and Jackie, or the mysterious woman at the psychiatric hospital, or the Shakespeare teacher, or well basically this could be a very long list if I kept going. The characters in this comic, whether small or big players, are so well imagined and explored that they have their own stories. Each of these stories is entertaining, and in the case of Mr. Ridgeway the Shakespeare teacher, as emotionally gripping and memorable as anything you've ever come across. His one issue would draw comparisons to the love story in Up, but this one having a much more gut-wrenching ending. Another key to what makes this series great is how it makes sometimes even the most despicable or annoying characters sympathetic. Through flashbacks and an enriching of the world, we are able to peer into the pasts and inner lives of a lot of the minor characters, letting us understand and care for them. This makes for a rich cast that we find ourselves rooting for and sometimes even mourning.
