10 Reasons Why Batman Needs Alfred Back
2. Advisor
Alfred Pennyworth was an advisor to Bruce Wayne throughout his life. In Batman: Year One, Lieutenant James Gordon came to Wayne Manor to investigate the new vigilante and his attacks on the city’s mobs. Alfred aided Bruce in creating the self-absorbed persona of the billionaire playboy to throw Gordon off the trail. The butler’s continuing lessons in the theatrical arts have helped Master Wayne keep that persona far from his more nocturnal activities.
Alfred’s advice continued on a nightly basis, occasionally using the moniker “Penny-One” over the communication devices used by Batman and his allies. He would aid the Dark Knight with his impressive skills on the Bat-Computer. Alfred was also especially helpful in aiding Bruce with knowledge of current events. Bats often became so focused on his mission and the criminal world that some aspects of the world might slip by him, but these were things that Bruce Wayne should know and care about. Alfred stayed on top of that for him.
Due to Punchline’s Joker Toxin, Bruce believed that Alfred was still talking to him. Clearly, he was struggling with the death of his father figure and friend, but he held full conversations with this hallucination of Alfred as he struggled to deal with the fallout of the Joker War. Even in death and purely in Wayne’s head, his long-time advisor got him on his feet once again.
