10 Reasons Why Donny Cates’ Venom Was So Great

1. It Sets Up A Whole New Era

Donny Cates Venom
Marvel Comics

By the final issue of Donny Cates’ Venom, the reader truly gets the sense that a meaningful story has been told that has changed the characters and their world. It doesn’t circle back round to the beginning to leave a clean slate for the next creative team. In an industry that thrives on ‘the illusion of change,’ this kind of ending is satisfying to see.

The status quo of Eddie and Dylan Brock is completely different from the beginning of the run, a result of their completed character arcs. The final issue is ideal in that it sets up a future for the characters, while also being such an effective finale that it would serve as a fitting ending if Venom never appeared in a comic again.

The new creative team of Al Ewing, Ram V and Bryan Hitch are building on this in their new run, as opposed to undoing it so they can start from scratch, which is a testament to just how impactful Donny Cates’ run is. Many comics make the claim that ‘nothing will be the same again,’ but this run is already demonstrating it. Venom will truly never be the same again.
