10 Sandman Fates Worse Than Death

1. Angering The Kindly Ones

Kindly Ones The Sandman Three Witches
DC Comics

There are few creatures in existence who are equal to or more powerful than the Endless. One of those is the One Who Are Three, The Kindly Ones. Also known as the Fates in their divine aspect and the Furies in their vengeful one, the Kindly Ones have been oracles, prophets, and defenders of women for centuries.

Created by Alex Toth for The Witching Hour #1, The Three Witches first appeared in Sandman #2 to advise Morpheus about the location of his pouch of sand, his helm, and his ruby. In the 14-issue storyline that started in Vertigo Jam #1 and was an arc also called the “Kindly Ones” that ran from issues #57 through #69 of the Neil Gaiman-written Sandman series, the Hecate took on a truly destructive aspect against the Dream King.

Lyta Hall had convinced herself that Morpheus had killed her son Daniel, who had been born in the Dream Realm. The boy was, in fact, alive and had been kidnapped by Loki and Puck and was soon recovered by Mathew the Raven and the Corinthian. Lyta beseeched the Kindly Ones to kill the Dream King. They began their assault on the Dreaming, killing Merv Pumpkinhead and Abel and destroying Fiddler’s Green. Morpheus sacrificed himself to save the Dreaming and Daniel became the next Dream King. So, poor Lyta Hall still lost her son to the Dreaming.
