7. Gotham Is A City Of Heroes

Batman and his small army of sidekicks and associates may be the primary protectors of Gotham City and the surrounding areas now, but they are far from the only heroes who have protected the city over the decades.

It’s impossible to look at the history of 20th Century Gotham without talking about Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern. Scott owned the Gotham Broadcasting Company and protected the city and the entire country both during and after the war from Nazis, terrorists, saboteurs, and much more.

The Golden Age Black Canary also lived and operated out of mid-century Gotham City, and her daughter, using the same hero title, lived in the city when she worked with Oracle and the Birds of Prey decades later. For a short period, the Justice Society of America operated out of Gotham before moving to Washington, D.C. and later to NYC. John Zatara, the Golden Age magician and All-Star Squadron member, also operated out of the city for much of his career.

In modern times, Zatara’s daughter Zatanna owns the magical mansion Shadowcrest which exists in multiple dimensions and is also tethered to Gotham City. Jewish hero Ragman’s alter-ego Rory Regan operates the Gotham-based pawn shop “Taters N’ Rags”, and Tommy Monaghan, the antihero Hitman, operates out of the Cauldron area, not to mention Jason Blood, the human host for the demon Etrigan, lives in Park Row.
