10 Shocking Cover Ups DC Comics Wants You To Forget

7. The New 52

DC's New 52 was a massive redesign of the entire DC Universe in 2011, and while it isn't exactly a cover-up, it's definitely something DC would like to leave in its past. In a number of ways, it was similar to the ill-fated DC Explosion, and it was nearly as damaging to the company.

The New 52 was a complete relaunch of the DC Universe, and unlike the Crisis on Infinite Earths, which was an incredibly popular and successful redesign of DC's books, it was mostly a failure. DC ended all of its longest-running books and relaunched them at #1 with a reboot.

Characters were redesigned with new costumes, their origin stories were altered, and when you have characters people have been reading for decades that get flipped into something new, you're bound to make them angry. Fans didn't appreciate all of the changes, and a lot of hardcore readers ragequit DC altogether.

New 52 was marketed and hyped like crazy leading up to its release, but it burned brightly and faded almost right away. Many of the 52 newly relaunched series were canceled early, and the only way DC could fix the problem was to pretend it never happened by kicking off DC You in 2015 and DC Rebirth the following year. These events served to return things back to normal at the DC Universe, though very few elements of New 52 remained.
