10 Shocking Cover Ups DC Comics Wants You To Forget
5. Nearly Selling Out To Marvel Comics
It's no secret that both Marvel and DC have suffered financially over the years. The reason there are so many incongruent Marvel Movies is due to a selloff of the film rights to stave off bankruptcy, and DC has had similar issues over the years, which almost led to the unthinkable.
Back in 1984, the rivalry between Marvel and DC nearly concluded when Warner Communications began talks with Marvel to sell all of its characters to the company. This would have concluded DC Comics' publishing operation and handed the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and everyone else to the House of Ideas.
The talks were going well enough, and it was looking as if the deal was going to be signed, but it never concluded with a sale, and the reason has got to be embarrassing for DC. Jim Galton, the publisher of Marvel Comics at the time, didn't think DC's characters were worth the money.
He didn't feel like they were comparable to Marvel's characters, and he passed on the deal. That's a pretty low blow considering DC's characters aren't only some of the best in comic book history, but they also work well as television series and film adaptations. Marvel could have ended the rivalry as the absolute victor, but it didn't go that way, and we are left with the two giants, still duking it out decades later.
