Batman’s entire life seems to be one long string of tragedies. Personal loss has followed the Dark Knight ever since he was a child, yet Bruce Wayne has managed to give his existence a semblance of hope under the mantle of Batman. His war on crime has saved countless lives, yet every time he can’t save someone, his life tends to spiral out of control. In fact, one of his earliest failures almost cost him everything.

When a little girl named Sissy Porter was kidnapped and trapped in a collapsing water tunnel, it all seemed business as usual to Bats. Yet, no matter how much he tried, Bruce could not move the blocks of concrete that were blocking their escape and he was forced to watch Sissy drown. The girl’s death devastated the Caped Crusader, as he painfully discovered his own human limitations.

A vulnerable Batman started using Venom as a means of overcoming his weaknesses. His addiction quickly went out of control and almost made Bruce do something as unthinkable as trying to kill James Gordon. Batman’s will eventually won the fight and the Dark Knight emerged out of this tragedy as a better hero.
