10 Shocking Times Superheroes Just QUIT

1. Spider-Man - Spider-Man #50

Well, it pretty much had to be this one at the top, didn't it?

In the Spider-Man canon, there are a few generally agreed upon issues and moments that stand out among the rest to be true blue classics. The final scene of "If This Be My Destiny", "The Night Gwen Stacy Died", the issue where Green Goblin finds out who Spider-Man really is, and of course, "Spider-Man No More".

Peter's superhero life has always interfered with his normal life, that's the entire crux of his character. But it was in issue #50 when it all really came to a head for the first time. Fighting bad guys not only costs him a date with Gwen Stacy, but it also starts seriously costing him his grades. And if that weren't bad enough, his Aunt May falls seriously ill, and because of a supervillain fight, he was unable to be there for her when she needed him the most.

Add all that up with the icing on the cake of the Daily Bugle doing to Spider-Man what the Bugle does best, and the straw finally broke the camel's back. Peter throws his suit in the trash and storms off, in one of the most shocking and iconic images in comic book history.

It didn't last, obviously, but it took quite a lot to convince him to throw back on the suit. And even with him walking back on his decision, that doesn't stop this from being the most shocking time a hero just gave up.
