The NetherRealm project has been well-received as both as a fighting game and a new spin on old DC tropes. The original's success spawned two sequels and several comic tie-ins that helped flesh out this new and terrifying world.

The story focuses on a world ruled by a despotic Superman and the ensuing rebellion posed by an insurgency led by Batman. The Man of Steel's descent into tyranny is sparked by the murder of Lois Lane at the hands of the Joker. The grieving hero directs his rage at the Clown Prince of Crime and this sets the story in motion.

Former teammates wage war on each other and abandon old friendships for the purposes of dominating and liberating the world, respectively.

The enmity between Superman and Batman, in particular, is difficult to watch as the former brothers-in-arms' crusades breaks them physically and mentally and drags the rest of the former League members into oblivion.
