10 Smartest Comic Book Villains

10. Ozymandias (DC Comics)

Ozymandias, from the Watchmen comics that were set in a different canon to the standard DC universe, was both the main character and antagonist of the series. A former hero, Adrian Alexander Veidt was born in 1939 in to a rich family and he always achieved good grades in school. His intelligence would only ever increase over time and, as a result, when he turned against his former team mates, he became a threat on many levels. Ozymandias is an exceptionally capable fighter, displaying skill, ability, strength and speed so far above his peers that he appears almost superhuman. With that, in addition to the fact that he is also a master strategist, possesses a photographic memory, owns a lot of advanced technology and is a bona fide genius, he both out-gunned and outwitted the heroes who were previously his friends. Utilising his genius in genetic experimentation, Ozymandias created a genetically-engineered feline, which he named Bubastis (which is the Greek name for an ancient Egyptian city whose population honoured the goddess Bast), to serve as both his pet and protector. He then managed to frame several people for the deaths of a number of individuals, as well as staging an assassination attempt on himself, before really getting down to business and putting his mind to its most potent use. He went on to put together an extremely elaborate secret plot with the aim of creating a catastrophic event to deceive the world into uniting against a common enemy and subsequently averting the imminent nuclear war. He teleported a biologically-engineered, telepathic creature to New York City, with the plan being for it to immediately explode in a psychic shock wave, killing millions and convincing the world that they were under extraterrestrial attack. The United States and the Soviet Union - who were on the brink of the aforementioned nuclear confrontation - would then end their feud and join forces against these apparent alien invaders (so, while he was a villain due to the consequences of what he did, he did have good intentions in mind ultimately). When he was confronted by his former team-mates, who had arrived to stop him, he explained his plan to them and they insisted he wouldn't pull it off. He then famously stated that he "did it thirty-five minutes ago", proving that he was way ahead of them. He then used an intrinsic field subtractor of his own design to disintegrate the enormously powerful Doctor Manhattan and, although Manhattan was able to reform, this proved he was more than capable of battling even super-powered foes, thanks to his unrivalled genius.
