The Joker’s insanity is one of the most defining elements of his character, so when he went sane in the story arc ‘Going Sane’ from the mid-nineties, fans were left in complete shock. After believing he has killed Batman, Joker’s mind snaps and the character becomes sane.

The Ace of Knaves even gets a partner and begins to have a happy home life. What's more interesting is the complete switch in the morals of the character, the sane Joker is a polite, charming individual. It is almost unthinkable that this character used to be the Joker.

However, this being the Joker, his sanity doesn’t last long. Upon learning that Batman isn’t dead, the inner-Joker starts to come out again and it isn’t long before the Clown Prince of Crime is insane again.
