A Green Lantern is an intergalactic police officer that can create any construct he or she can imagine by using a Power Ring. The fourth official Green Lantern, John Stewart, is considered the most professional of the Green Lanterns from Earth. He is also the best flyer and he can form the sturdiest constructs.

However, Stewart wasn't always known for his diligence. When he first obtained his Power Ring, Stewart became cocky and believed he could accomplish anything with his newfound power.

When he was tasked to protect the planet of Xanshi from a bomb, he overestimated his abilities and was unable to stop the weapon from detonating. The explosion destroyed the entire planet, killing all inhabitants but one. The survivor, who calls herself Fatality, vowed vengeance on Stewart for failing to save her planet. She constantly reminds Stewart that he is responsible for her doomed world which led to him suffering depression and psychosomatic paralysis. He was so devastated by his failure that he attempted suicide.

Although Stewart didn't directly kill the inhabitants of Xanshi, he sees himself as being responsible for the planet's destruction since he could have avoided its demise if he was better prepared.
