10 Superman Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die
1. All-Star Superman
If you ever needed proof that Grant Morrison is the greatest thing to ever happen to comic books, then look no further than All-Star Superman. While brainstorming with DC editor Dan Raspler and failing to come up with any new idea for the character, it took a chance meeting with a cosplayer to set the wheels in motion.
As Morrison explained in a conversation with Newsarama: "He was perched with one knee drawn up, chin resting on his arms. He looked totally relaxed... and I suddenly realized this was how Superman would sit. He wouldn't puff out his chest or posture heroically, he would be totally chilled."
This would spawn a heartbreaking story of a solar irradiated Superman sacrificing himself to repair the sun, and in doing so making this book possibly the greatest thing Morrison has ever turned in during his unbelievably successful hand to.
All-Star also owes much of its success to the talents of Frank Quitely, who'd collaborate with Morrison all over again during Batman & Robin: Reborn.
