10 Superman Questions That Always Confused You

8. Why Doesn't He Get Overwhelmed By His Enhanced Senses?

Supes' powers might have changed a lot over the years, but one that's always stuck around has been his X-Ray vision, or enhanced vision as it goes by these days.

The ability enables the Man of Steel to look through solid objects to reveal the contents within, lest a quantity of lead is blocking his way. However, when using his vision, how exactly is he able to focus on what to look through? If his vision is so powerful, wouldn't it just continue to look through all matter until it hit a lead wall?

Well, not exactly. As was previously mentioned, Supes' X-Ray vision is actually just one aspect of his enhanced senses. He's able to focus on individual layers just by concentrating, and the same goes for his super-hearing.

By now it's well established that the Man of Steel can hear pretty much anything he can put his mind to, but while you'd imagine that ability would be too much for one man to bear, through years of practice, Supes has managed to block out distractions and tune his ears to pick up on certain noises. It's not something he can switch on at the flick of a switch, but given Metropolis' criminals have taken to holding meetings in lead lined rooms and are conscious of mentioning him by name, it goes to show just how effective those powers are.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
