Many Marvel editors didn't like the idea that Peter Parker was a married man since they felt like it aged the character. As a result, the company's higher-ups pulled one convoluted storyline after another to end Peter and Mary Jane's marriage.

And in Amazing Spider-Man #13, the creative team thought, "Hey, why don't we just kill off MJ?" In this issue, we see Mary Jane walk onto an airplane moments before it explodes. Since nobody onboard survived, it's safe to assume she's dead.

Although this moment is meant to be shocking, it comes across as gimmicky. Because of the status quo, we know Marvel aren't just going to kill off Peter's central love interest, especially in such an anticlimactic way. Nevertheless, the comics dragged this plot point out for well over a year.

We later discover (to the shock of maybe like eight people) that Mary Jane... is alive! It turns out a crazy mutant called Stalker boarded her plane and kidnapped MJ just before blowing it up.

And what happened after Spider-Man finally rescues his wife from the kidnapper? She dumped him. Way to go, Marvel.
