10 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined Spider-Man For Everyone

2. Aunt May Is Peter Parker's Mother?? - Trouble #1-5 (2003-2004)

The five-part mini-series, Trouble, centres around Peter Parker's Aunt May, Uncle Ben, and his parents, Mary and Richard, when they were teenagers. As a concept this is a great idea since we get to see what Peter's family members were like when they were his age.

Unfortunately, the comic was a disaster. The four main characters are depicted as horny teenagers and talk about sex every second page.

Being the devil's advocate, you could argue "but they're teenagers!", but that would also require forgetting just how weird a trope it is that adult writers continue to write adolescents this way. Plus, so was Peter, and he was never depicted as sex-crazed as this lot.

Richard complains how he can't "close the deal" with Mary while Ben whinges how he's spending all his wages on condoms. When you read dialogue like this, it's like the creative team were consciously trying to destroy these beloved characters' reputations.

The most baffling moment is when it is revealed that "Aunt" May is Peter Parker's mother and she gave her child to Richard and Mary to raise!

Now, you could argue that this story shouldn't be taken seriously since it takes place in an alternative universe. But even if that is the case Trouble still came off as incredibly gimmicky.
