10 Terrifying Joker Stories You Never Read
8. No Man's Land
Sometimes, one act of true horror is all it takes to elevate (or relegate, depending on how you look at it) an otherwise by the numbers story to true horror status.
A supporting, ensemble role often allows ample room for the Joker to horrify us with his uniquely chaotic brand of violence.
In the No Man’s Land story arc, Gotham has been cut off from the mainland after the destruction of its bridges, and soon descends into anarchy and chaos.
Whilst appearances from Huntress, Poison Ivy, Bane and even Superman keep the storyline broad and not as Joker-centric as others on this list, it is our man who leaves the most lasting, most sickening impression.
Kidnapping all of Gotham’s babies - an act of abject depravity in and of itself - Joker forces Sarah Essen-Gordon (what is it about Joker and the Gordon family?) to chose between stopping him, or saving the life of one of the infant hostages who is unceremoniously thrown in Sarah’s direction.
Not a conscious decision but a primal human reaction, Sarah saves the child.
Her reward for doing so?
Joker shoots her in the head.
