10 Things Everyone Forgets About The Justice Society Of America
5. Brought Low By Congress
First detailed as a story from the Huntress to Power Girl in Adventure Comics, Vol. 1 # 466 and expanded on in several other comics, time-traveling militaristic despot Per Degaton tried a scheme unlike any he had ever attempted before. He used suspicion, descent, and lies told in the back rooms of the Capitol. Degaton convinced several high-ranking men in the Federal government that the JSA was linked with communism, the root of all evil in 1950s America.
The JSA was subpoenaed to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. After a lengthy hearing where many baseless accusations were leveled against the members of the Justice Society, the Committee Members demanded that the Justice Society members unmask or disband. In an uncharacteristic display of passion, the Spectre vehemently expresses to the Committee the need for his teammates' secret identities to protect their family and loved ones against enemy agents. The Committee was unmoved and Doctor Fate teleported the team out of the chamber and back to their headquarters.
Alan Scott concentrated on his broadcasting company. Jay Garrick retired with his wife, Joan. Ted Grant opened a gym. Al Pratt married his girlfriend and had a child. Hawkman and Hawkwoman returned to archaeology and also had a child, as well. Fate returned to his tower in Boston. Poor Ted Knight had a nervous breakdown after the death of his wife due to his part in the creation of the Atomic Bomb. Addicted to the thrill of the action, Rex Tyler never retired and kept fighting the good fight as Hourman.
