10 Things From DC Comics That REALLY Haven't Aged Well

8. DC's Misrepresentation Of Feminism

Although many might be quick to note the number of empowering women within the DC roster, this wasn't always the case for DC Comics. In fact, many representations of female characters, as well as Feminism itself, had originally suffered from DC’s misguided attempts at being progressive.

The 1970s were particularly ripe for these kinds of creative decisions by DC creators, who often portrayed female characters exercising a Feminist mentality while being drawn wearing an itty-bitty uniform. What was perhaps worse, however, was the “Super-bitch” archetype that frequently misinterpreted fierce women as being totally superior and only loyal to themselves.

Power Girl was a clear example of this archetype, due to her outspoken and unapologetic attitude in regards to her capabilities as an individual hero. Her Feminist qualities were then only downplayed further by her cleavage forward uniform. Women portrayed like this, in turn, come across as more of a slap in the face of Feminism than as an effort to incorporate female empowerment.
