10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Guardians Of The Galaxy

2. Groot Can Talk Properly

Fun though Rocket was and hopelessly charming though we found Chris Pratt's Peter Quill, the real breakout star of Guardians Of The Galaxy has to be Groot. When you see him, you will believe a man can 1. Wish he had a pet wooden alien, 2. Cry at a wooden alien, and 3. Spend the weeks following searching desperately for his own potted, dancing wooden alien. Part of the charm of the character is that nobody knows anything about him - save for his seemingly unending powers and kind heart - because all he can say are the words "I", "am" and "Groot", exclusively in that order. And Vin Diesel does a very good job of saying them, if we do say so. Which is how you'll currently find him in the comics, too. And like the movie version, Groot is actually able to communicate more complex ideas that simply repeating his name over and over again. You just have to be tuned into the minute differences and nuances in the way he pronounces the words. Before that, however, he didn't need to rely on Rocket to translate his words for the less enlightened speakers in the group - he was totally fluent in English, an ability he only lost after sacrificing himself during the Annihilation storyline that brought together the current Guardians Of The Galaxy in the first place. When he grew back from a surviving sapling, he found his vocabulary a little more limited. More surprising than that, however, might be that in his original appearance, Groot was a baddie. In the pages of 1960's Tales to Astonish #13, by principal Marvel architects Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he was an extraterrestrial plant monster who came to Earth looking to kidnap humans and experiment on them. He was only defeated when introduced to wood's natural enemy by a smart scientist: termites. Which ate him alive. Still could speak in full sentences back then, too.
