10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Guardians Of The Galaxy

5. Drax Used To Be Human

Drax The Destroyer went through a number of changes when he made the leap from the page to the silver screen. His skin tone was changed from green to a more ashy grey, to differentiate himself from the Incredible Hulk. His bodypaint became more like scars all over his person, which looks pretty badass. His personality also changed from, well, brooding badass to slightly stupid thug who occasionally remembered to grieve for his lost family. And there was all that stuff about his race not understanding metaphor or irony which, whilst it was a hilarious running joke, absolutely wouldn't work in the comic books. Because in the comics Drax isn't an alien - he's a human who got turned into whatever it is he is now. Before he was Drax he was actually Arthur Sampson Douglas, a name which is a lot less suitable of having the word "Destroyer" after it. His family was still wiped out by an evil alien race, but in this case it was Thanos himself who directly killed them off, worried he'd been spotted by humans. Arthur actually died, too, but his "spirit" was captured by Thanos' dad Mentor and Titan god Kronos, who stuck it in a new body in order to act as their champion against the purple-faced bad guy. A new body which, initially, was also pretty different from Batista's appearance in the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie. He had the green skin, but he also had a pretty goofy purple costume. He also had a completely different power set, which let him fly about the cosmos firing lasers out of his hands, instead of just being a buff dude who was good with knives. He's since gotten closer to the big screen version in the comics, but that's a storied history unlikely to be explored any time soon.
