10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Green Goblin

1. His Impossible Hair

Norman Osborn Hair
Marvel Comics

Look, okay - this is something that cannot be ignored. It's too glorious not to.

The Osborn hairline is something to behold, receding to the point where only a thin, triangular strip falls over the middle of their respective foreheads. That in itself is pretty weird, but then you get to the actual hair itself and... it... just... doesn't... make any sense?

No one's saying that Norman or Harry have to change their style or anything, because to be honest the look is pretty legendary; it speaks for itself, and in the unlikely event Marvel were to opt for a completely different hairdo altogether, readers would be deprived of seeing a truly wonderful head of hair.

If anything, the most frustrating aspect of Osborn's hair is that no actor could ever hope to replicate it authentically onscreen. Willem Defoe was superb as the character, but he couldn't hope to replicate Osborn's immortal locks. The same goes for James Franco, Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan, with none coming close to replicating the trademark Osborn hairline on the big screen.

Whether you think it's a good or a bad thing, Osborn's hair always seems to be at the centre of attention. Given it's such a distraction, though, it's understandable as to why Marvel haven't dared tried to replicate it for mainstream audiences.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
