10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Spider-Man

2. Spider-Mobile

Marvel Comics

In the wake of the tragic death of Peter Parker€™'s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, Marvel decided to lighten the mood of the Amazing Spider-Man by introducing a new distraction for Spidey. The Web Slinger is asked by two advertising executives to build and promote a car using a new engine designed by Corona Motors. Spidey initially refuses the offer -€“ he'€™s a superhero who uses web shooters to swing around New York City, so why would he need a car? -€“ but reconsiders when he realizes the promotion could help him make rent.

With the help of Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, Spider-Man unveils the Spider-Mobile. The car is an instant flop, and after a few issues, the vehicle ends up in the drink thanks to some chicanery courtesy of the master of special effects, Mysterio.

The car makes one last gasp at relevancy in what may be the greatest title of Spider-Man comic of all time, €œMy Killer, the Car!€ in Amazing Spider-Man #160. This time, the Tinkerer has taken control of the vehicle and attempts to use it to murder Spidey.

Still, don€™t expect it to make a comeback any time soon. Reportedly, as part of the upcoming €œSpider-Verse€ event, Spidey scribe Dan Slott pitched an alternative version of Spider-Man dubbed €œPeter Parked Car€ that would represent the Spider-Mobile. The pitch was resoundingly rejected.
