10 Things You Didn't Know About Newspaper Comics

10. Beetle Bailey Is Related To Hi And Lois

Flipping open to the funny pages, one might notice a certain resemblance between Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois. This likely comes as little surprise, seeing as both are the brainchildren of Mort Walker. Stylistic similarities often carry on between different works by the same author, with no real meaning behind it, but this is a different case: If it weren't for Beetle Bailey, Hi and Lois would probably not exist. As it turns out, Hi and Lois is a spin-off of Beetle Bailey, where they first appeared prior to debuting in their own 1954 comic strip. There, we learn that Beetle Bailey is the brother of Lois Bailey Flagston, a fact which becomes more apparent when you look at Hi and Lois's oldest son, Chip, who sports a family resemblance to his uncle in behavior and appearance alike, particularly their perpetually-covered eyes. Seeing as the two are literally related, this has resulted in the occasional (albeit rare) crossover, such as one in 1994 wherein Beetle visited Hi and Lois for their 40th anniversary.
