Although he initially was against the new vigilante and actively tried to apprehend him at one point, Lt. James Gordon began to trust and came to rely on the Dark Knight as the one person that he could honestly count on in the seemingly corrupt Gotham City government.

Gordon was able to convince the new Commissioner to put a huge “Bat-signal” on the roof. This would have the two-fold purpose of summoning the costumed crimefighter when needed and frightening the cowardly criminal underworld.

Along with crusading new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, Gordon and Batman took on one of the root causes of the corruption in Gotham: The Roman Crime Family, led by boss Carmine Falcone. This trio brought the Roman down but at a terrible cost, as Falcone underling Sal Maroni threw acid at Dent’s face in court. This unhinged Harvey’s sanity and turned him into the villainous Two-Face.

A few years after his debut, Batman took on the young sidekick, Robin. Lt. Gordon was initially upset with the Caped Crusader for exposing a child to this line of work, but Jim eventually began to respect the young hero and trusted him as much as he did Batman. Gordon's trust in subsequent Robins would be a different story, depending on who was in possession of that sidekick mantle.
