10 Times Batman Died (And What Happened Next)

7. Batman Sacrificed Himself To Take Out Steppenwolf On Earth 2

Batman Arkham
DC Comics

Earth 2 has had a lot happen to it over the years, but there's one thing it never seems short of, and that's a Batman who manages to get killed. It happens in that reality more than any other, but when it does occur, it's usually through some sort of grand gesture.

When Earth 2 is invaded by Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, Batman goes on the offensive with Wonder Woman and Superman. They target a tower, which was being used to transport the Parademons to Earth 2, and the only way to stop the invasion was to destroy it.

The big guns — Superman and Wonder Woman — provide support by mounting a defense to keep Batman safe, so he can make his way to the tower's power core. The plan was to set up the core's self-destruct, but they hit a snag shortly after Batman locates his objective.

Batman could blow the power core, but the only way he could make that happen was to trigger its self-destruct, and that was going to require a sacrifice. Without hesitation, Batman triggered the explosion, resulting in his immediate death. His sacrifice won an early victory in Earth 2 #1, but it cost the team greatly, and his daughter had to witness it happen.
