10 Times Batman Died (And What Happened Next)

5. He Pulled A Fast One Over On The Man Of Steel

Batman Arkham
DC Comics

In Frank Miller's hit miniseries, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman leaves retirement behind to tackle the rampant crime in Gotham City. Superman is working as an agent of the United States Government with the rest of the superhero community either retired, dead, or missing. This put Superman and Batman at odds with one another, and the inevitable confrontation between the two heroes would lead to Batman's demise.

Before that dark conclusion, Bruce Wayne takes on a young 13-year-old girl named Carrie as his Protégé and newest Robin. When Batman and Superman finally do come to blows, it's only when Bats is wearing a suit of armour, and Superman had just been at ground zero of a nuclear explosion.

The fight is brutal and shows just how creative Bruce is at going up against a god. The fight came to an end when Bruce had a heart attack and died. Batman had finally died in the DC Universe, and the world was left to mourn him.

Only, that's not what really happened. It was all a ruse, which was carried out by a poison that fooled the world into believing Bruce was dead. This left Bruce alone to train Carrie and a new generation of vigilante crimefighters from behind the scenes.
