10 Times Batman Died (And What Happened Next)

3. The Ancient Atlanteans Wasted Bats (And The Entire Justice League)

Batman Arkham
DC Comics

JLA #74 is something of a crazy issue for the superhero team, as it dives into some dark and twisted scenes to upset the balance readers typically expect from such a title. In the book, the Justice League and the ancient Atlanteans get into a massive battle after the Flash is discovered in their captivity.

They didn't just capture him though; they ripped off his legs, so that's already a dark and twisted thing to do to the Fastest Man Alive. The JLA definitely brought their A-Game to the fight, but it didn't go well for any of them at all.

Over the course of the issue, each member is killed, one after the other. Superman dies after he flies around the planet at full speed, only to slam into the Atlantean plaza. Green Lantern gets his heart pulled from his chest, and Batman is slaughtered fairly easily. The bodies were then displayed on pikes as the Atlanteans partied.

Fortunately, Batman and the rest of the JLA didn't remain dead for long, though they were technically undead for a bit. The next issue sees them return as undead versions of themselves, but everything is eventually sorted out through time travel, magic, and various other means.
