10 Times Comics Made Terrible Villains Great
2. Catman - Villains United
If there’s one thing Batman absolutely needed it was another silly gimmick villain. To make matters worse, Thomas Blake didn’t even come up with his own silly gimmick, he just nicked Catwoman’s. Then again, maybe that’s a good start for someone aiming to be a master thief.
Regardless, getting on the bad side of both Gotham’s top hero and one of its top villains is never a good idea, and Catman soon found himself caged. Worse still, the character then became a laughing stock, portrayed as a fat incompetent slob who heroes were embarrassed to have in their rogues’ gallery.
Despite seemingly being eaten by a gorilla (you’d be surprised how often it happens), Catman showed up again in Gail Simone’s Villains United. Realising what a loser he had become, Blake decided to get back in touch with his roots by living with a pack of lions. He managed to not get eaten, even after becoming pure beefcake, and joined up with a bunch of fellow no-name villains to form the Secret Six.
The quirky supervillain team then got their own incredible series and Catman got plenty of moments to shine, even managing to fight Batman himself to a standstill.
