There aren't a lot of readers out there who enjoy it when a new writer or artist comes along and shakes things up. There are even fewer who appreciate it when a character they've been reading for years turns around and shows he's not the person they thought they were all along.

That's what happened in "The Crossing" when it was revealed that Tony Stark was working as a secret agent for Kang the Conqueror, and he'd been doing it for years. The whole thing came to light when he began to act erratically, and his fellow Avengers took note.

Technically, this wasn't Tony's fault, as he was being manipulated by Immortus, a time-traveling supervillain who had gained control of Tony's mind. Tony's erratic behavior included going on a murder spree, killing Yellowjacket on the doorstep of Avenger's Mansion, and being a jerk about the whole thing when he was finally confronted.

Now, it could be said that none of this was Tony's fault, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a terror to be around. In the end, he managed to sacrifice his own life to thwart the plan. Tony remained dead until the ill-fated "Heroes Reborn" series brought him back to life in the Marvel Universe.
