During the 1970s, Spider-Man battled a biochemist called Miles Warren AKA The Jackal. With his expertise in cloning, the Jackal forced the webslinger to fight a clone of himself called Ben Reilly. After the Jackal was defeated, Spidey and Ben went their separate ways.

But 20 years later, Spider-Man ran into his clone, now going by the name, the Scarlet Spider. During this period, Spider-Man learned a terrible secret - Ben Reilly wasn't the clone, Peter Parker was! Believing he was living the life Ben deserved, Peter retired to look after his pregnant wife, allowing Ben to become the official Spider-Man.

Although the creative team behind this story assumed the fanbase would be blown away by this twist, readers were up in arms. Because the hero they had followed for two decades wasn't the real Spider-Man, fans felt like they had been cheated, and thus, demanded for this revelation to be undone.

As a result, Marvel spent two years creating ANOTHER plot where Norman Osborn revealed he was responsible for convincing Peter he was the clone just to mess with his head.
