Many people are under the impression Sony canned Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and rebooted the franchise because of how badly Spider-Man 3 turned out.

But that not even a little bit true. Spidey's third outing may have been universally panned but it was also one of the most lucrative films ever upon its release. Earning $894 million at the box office, this threequel was the most successful Spider-Man movie until Spider-Man: Far From Home 12 years later. Since movie studios care about money above all else, they had every intention of making Spider-Man 4.

However, Sam Raimi hated the initial script and asked the studio to rewrite it to avoid the film suffering the same problems as the previous entry. Unfortunately, Raimi was against the clock since production had to start at a certain point or the rights for Spider-Man would revert back to Marvel. Despite the fact $100 million had been spent on pre-production for Spider-Man 4, the studio decided to cut their losses and cancel the film after they realised they couldn't see eye-to-eye with Raimi. To ensure they kept the rights for the character, Sony decided to reboot the franchise instead.
