10 Times Marvel Was Forced To Change Spider-Man

5. Spider-Man And Mary Jane Breaking Up

When Aunt May was fatally wounded during the One More Day storyline, Peter Parker vowed he would make a deal with the devil to save her.

And that's exactly what he did. After Mephisto offered to save May's life if Peter gave up his marriage with Mary Jane Watson, he agreed. This decision rewrote reality so Peter and MJ's wedding never took place.

Unsurprisingly, fans who had followed the pair's relationship for decades were furious since over 20 years of continuity had been discarded in an instant. Because this story is universally loathed, it makes you wonder why Marvel published it in the first place.

But according to long-time Spider-Man writer, Dan Slott, the company tried to reverse Spider-Man's marriage for years. Because Spidey's demographic consists of kids and teenagers, the writers didn't think readers could relate to the character as much if he was married.

In an attempt to return Spider-Man to his roots, editor-in-chief Joe Quesada drummed up the One More Day story arc so his marriage with MJ never happened.

Why Quesada thought readers would find their hero making a deal with Satan more relatable than being married has never been addressed.
