Futures End was a massive company-wide crossover event set five years in the future of the DC Universe. It was created by Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgen, and Keith Giffen and ran for 49 issues. 35 years in the future, nearly all the world’s superheroes were turned into cybernetic bug-like creatures by the semi-sentient satellite Brother Eye.

The elderly Bruce Wayne created a time machine to travel back to the present day. Before he could make the trip, Wayne was attacked by cyborg bugs, forcing Terry McGinnis, aka Batman, to make the trip. Terry arrived five years too late. Learning that Mister Terrific was behind the technology that led to the ascension of Brother Eye, McGinnis posed as a homeless person outside his building to keep an eye on things.

Terry attempted to shut down Brother Eye but accidentally helped it to develop further due to his future technology. McGinnis and a newly resurfaced Red Robin made a final assault on Brother Eye, where Batman sacrificed himself to stop the machine. Tim Drake took up the Batman mantle, traveled back five years earlier, and convinced Brother Eye to ignore the distress call from Earth-2. He then traveled back to the far future, only to find their efforts changed nothing. Tim then vowed to raise a resistance force and bring down Brother Eye in his own time period.
