In Justice League #39, the final issue of Scott Snyder’s Justice/Doom War, Perpetua had taken over everyone. The Martian Manhunter returned and informed humankind that Perpetua wanted people to live by themselves, to trust no one, and to become predators again.

J’onn offered humanity a different path. A path of hope. Of compassion, love, and friendship. And above all, trusting the word “together”. But humanity chose Perpetua, and, with a mighty blow, she disintegrated all of the core members on the the Justice League.

The Martian Manhunter reformed on the Moon and was soon joined by his teammates, having been saved by the cosmic entities The Quintessence and taken out of normal existence. The Quintessence was Ganthet of the Guardians of the Universe, Hera, Queen of the Amazons, Highfather of the New Gods, the Wizard Shazam, and the Spectre.

The assembled entities explained the Multiverse was no longer united and evil had spread far and wide, causing fear and anxiety among humanity and fostering the rise of Doom. That is why the people refused to embrace J’onn’s idea of togetherness. However, the Quintessence had protected one path through universal history that might change the tide against Perpetua if the team was willing to fight for it.

In one voice, the League said “Yes” and leaped into the portal to fight the good fight, perhaps for the final time.
