10 Most Tragic Deaths In The History Of Batman

8. Jack Drake (pre-New 52)

Most non-comics fans only know Dick Grayson as Robin, but there have actually been as many as five Robins in the main continuity Batman comics. The third Robin, more well-known to watchers of The New Batman Adventures, was Tim Drake. Before the New 52 took effect, Tim was the son of Jack Drake, a business man who was always traveling. While Drake and his wife were traveling, Tim stayed at a Gotham City boarding school. He eventually deduced Batman's secret identity and became the newest Robin. After the death of his wife and his business going bankrupt, Jack went through a phase of depression. Shortly after he recovered, he discovered his son's Robin gear. Knowing his son had a close relationship with Bruce Wayne, he corners Wayne with a gun demanding to know the truth. Although Bruce was able to disarm him, Jack now knew the truth about Batman and Robin. Tim was willing to give up the mantle of Robin for his father, but after a gang war erupted in Gotham, Tim realized that being Robin meant too much for him to give up. Although Jack disapproved, he allowed his son to continue.
Jack was killed during the events of Identity Crisis by Captain Boomerang, who was hired by the killer of Sue Dibny, the Elongated Man's wife. In an effort to frame Drake for Sue's murder, the killer sends Jack a gun to defend himself against the assailant. Although he's able to shoot Boomerang, he was still killed by Boomerang. Jack's death hit Tim hard, causing him to become more brooding. Bruce later adopts Tim, leading them to develop a new father-son relationship.
