10 Unbelievable DC Plot Twists That Shocked The World
7. Alec Holland Isn't The Swamp Thing
Alan Moore makes another appearance on this list, due to his stupendous run on he re-vamped Swamp Thing back in 1982. And, as is his way, this twist is a doozy.
Ever since his first appearance, way back in 1971, it has been etched in stone that the Swamp Thing is Alec Holland. He's the victim of an explosion that leaves his wife dead, and Alec covered in the bio-restorative formula they are working on, and this is how the big green monster is brought into the world. For over a decade this is lore until Alan Moore's run on the comic turns this theory on its head.
While he is cryogenically frozen and dormant, super bad dude Jason Woodrue performs an autopsy on ol' Swampy and discovers that Alec Holland never survived the explosion and that the creature under his knife is just that, a creature who just happens to possess the memories of Holland, which is why he's convinced they are one and the same.
This is shocking news and not just to the reader, as Swamp Thing takes it about as well as can be expected, cornering Woodrue and killing the hell out of him.
