10 Unpopular Comic Book Character Reboots (That Were Actually Perfect)
5. Captain America - Captain America: Steve Rogers
From his origins as a Nazi-bashing, Hitler-punching, propaganda pulp piece, Captain America has been not only one of Marvel's, then Timely's, most popular characters, but an enduring symbol of humble patriotism and moral righteousness.
The only superhero more American was Superman. Maybe. And while that might sound boring on the surface, Steve Rogers' struggle to remain a good and honorable man in a world where those traits are viewed differently from the one he was born into has always made for interesting reading.
But in 2016, two words completely changed how the world perceived him. After he was restored to his full powers by the reality-warping powers of Kobik, the living Cosmic Cube, Steve went back to work as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., but revealed to the audience that Kobik had been manipulated by the Red Skull. Instead of turning him back into his superhero self, she altered history to make him a deep-cover Hydra agent.
Fans were flabbergasted by the audacity and offence of having the living icon of American patriotism be outed as a Nazi agent. It didn't help that the writers confirmed that this wasn't a clone or mind-control - this was the actual Steve Rogers.
While there was no real justification for the famous "Hail Hydra," it did lead into the stellar and poignant Secret Empire storyline, where readers were warned what modern day Nazis would look like at a time where real-life politics were legitimately in a state of flux.
