How many super-powered ne'er-do-wells have come from around the world - the Universe - seeking out battle with the Man of Steel? And, unlike the gunslinger, these villains know that, generally, Superman does not kill. So, as long as a challenger is willing to accept defeat, one can fight Superman with little risk other than minor injury and imprisonment. Even more worrying, world-conquering alien emperors now eye Earth as a target. Consider that Earth was ignored by the Great Galactic Powers before Superman came along. After all, what did we offer them? A rural world, far off the main highways of galactic travel, barely into the atomic age, divided into quarrelsome nations? We weren't worth the effort of mounting an invasion. But the home of the Last Kryptonian? Now that's a prize!
