The success of Civil War might just be the worst thing that ever happened to Marvel. That event was massive, with countless tie-in issues and a massive status quo shift that led to the launch of a string of new #1 issues. Since then, yearly events have become commonplace, and each of them bring the same problems with them. However, they've also grown steadily more confusing, and are actually far from new reader friendly as a result. Never mind putting a copy of Secret Wars #1 in the hands of a newcomer to comics who has just watched Avengers: Age Of Ultron; even the biggest Marvel fans was left baffled by what was going on unless they had been following two specific titles for the past 18 months or so. While it's great that Marvel occasionally cater to their most devoted fans with events such as this one, it's frustrating for those on a limited budget who simply can't buy everything. Throw the endless tie in issues into the mix, and it's impossible to know where to start. For new readers and veterans alike, Marvel's over reliance on events has become frustrating and tedious, especially when whatever impact that have is usually undone shortly after. Thinking about it, the fact they're so hard to follow may be the least of their problems!
