10 Ways To Beat Superman

6. Nuclear Bombs

DC Comics

Now admittedly this one can vary depending on which incarnation of Superman we're talking about. Some incarnations of Kal-El are easily able to shake off a blast; in one early issue of Action Comics, the Man of Steel used his invulnerability to film an atom bomb test from inside the blast radius and in Batman v Superman, he was even able to survive a direct hit from a nuclear missile.

The Last Son of Krypton hasn't been so fortunate in other continuities though. In one of the most famous scenes in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (which can really apply to most of its scenes), Superman got caught up in a nuclear explosion. The combination of the blast's strength and its mushroom cloud blocking out the Sun left him as barely more than a skeleton and he was forced to drain the solar energy from the surrounding plant life just to keep himself alive.

For years, a common explanation for this discrepancy was that DKR's Superman was only so badly affected because his powers had weakened with age. However, a similar event also happened to a much younger Superman during the New 52, meaning that we all had to just back to laughing at anyone who tries to make sense of comic book continuity.

I was just a mild-mannered NCTJ accredited journalist until one day I found out the truth... that I could share my nerdy ramblings with people on the internet! It's just like mumbling to myself on the train, but without all the strange looks.
