10 Weirdest Comic Fan Theories You Won’t Believe Exist
4. The Joker Is A God
A profoundly unsettling and possibly canon theory about the Joker covers his potential true origin; that of Gelos, the God of Laughter.
The theory revolves around two crucial issues of the 2011 Justice League series - #42 and #44 respectively. In the first, we see Batman ask the omniscient Mobius Chair the Joker's true name, only for his face to fill with horror at the response. Combine this with Wonder Woman's monologue about Gelos - an evil god of laughter who reveled in others pain - literally being plastered over a picture of a laughing Joker, and the theory practically writes itself.
And really, this would make perfect sense. It would both explain why the Joker causes chaos for little to no reason, and why he constantly looks different in the comics, as the spirit of Gelos would theoretically be capable of taking a new human host anytime the body he inhabits is killed.
With the new 'Three Jokers' storyline, this theory does now seem somewhat less likely, but it does genuinely appear that for a time this was the route DC intended to go down with the Clown Prince of Crime.
