10 Worst Things DC Has Ever Done To Harley Quinn

9. The Drawing Contest Scandal

Harley Quinn
DC Comics

With DC in need of a new artist in 2013 for the Harley Quinn series, the developers behind the franchise designed a contest that, at the time, they thought would be a perfectly innocent way of choosing prospective workers.

The contest comprised of candidates drawing their interpretation of a single page of script, wherein Harley was shown doing a series of 'wacky' things - with one of these panels showing the supervillain in the bath while a series of toasters and other electrical appliances were being lowered into it.

Naturally, the idea of making a detailed drawing of a naked woman committing suicide was incredibly disliked by many, many people.

Ironically, had the panels actually been drawn as intended - in a 'looney tunes' style that would have downplayed the violence - then the scandal likely wouldn't have occurred.

But as the script never explicitly stated this was what was wanted, and as many artists draw a decidedly more scandalous version of a naked Harley Quinn murdering herself, the controversy grew and grew, until the creators apologised for having created the whole thing in the first place.
