The only thing stopping J'onn from being the world's powerful being is his crippling fear of fire. However, with the help of the reformed supervillain, Scorch, J’onn cured himself of arsonphobia.

However, the League then learned J'onn's terror of fire wasn't a phobia; it was a failsafe. J’onn may be the most peaceful member of the League but his ancestors were among the most monstrous aliens in the galaxy. These creatures, which were called The Burning, were telepathic, intangible, and could manipulate fire, making them unstoppable. Not even Superman could defeat one of them.

The Guardians of the Universe realised The Burning would devastate the cosmos once they were capable of space travel. The Guardians pre-emptively invaded the planet and genetically altered the aliens so they shut down when they contacted fire, rendering their greatest strength useless.

When J’onn cured himself of his arsonphobia, it triggered the DNA of his ancestors, turning him into an evil being called Fernus. He effortlessly defeated the entire League and was about to destroy the world until he was defeated by, of all people, Plastic Man. When he turned back into J’onn, he realized that he needed to maintain his phobia of fire forever.
