100 Greatest Comic Book Villains Of All Time

31. General Zod

General ZodFIRST APPEARANCE: ADVENTURE COMICS #283 Easily Superman's most famous enemy second only to Lex Luthor, General Zod is a warlord hailing from Superman's own home planet of Krypton, and as such displays the very same abilities as he. Where he appears to exceeds Supes is with his strategic battle know-how, capable of launching a more co-ordinated attack with whoever he aligns himself with, and also being accutely aware of what Earth's forces are likely to hurl at him. In spite of this, Zod is often stymied by his own arrogance and belief in his abilities, while failing to concede that his intermittent activities on Earth leave him at a physical disadvantage to Superman, who in largely remaining on Earth, has only had his powers grow with time. As a result, despite his clear intelligence, Zod is often a victim of his own making, usually causing him to be sent back to the Phantom Zone. He was portrayed by Terence "Kneel before Zod" Stamp in Richard Donner's Superman movies, and most recently by Michael Shannon in Man of Steel.

30. God

GodFIRST APPEARANCE: PREACHER (1995) As was a popular theme in 1990's DC comics, God served as the antagonist for Preacher, a creator who has since abandoned his creation. In the comic, God is not the benevolent overseer that his followers see him as, but instead an egomaniacal, selfish, monstrous brute who favoured keeping humanity in the dark as to his practices. His arrogant attitude caused him to expect humans to blindly follow him, condemning those who refused to do so. Things get complicated for God when Preacher's protagonist, Jesse Custer, fused with the supernatural entity Genesis and became potentially even more powerful than Him. In addition to this, God has to fend off characters such as The Saint of Killers, who ends up killing his divine congregation, and killing him in cold blood, effectively ending his corrupt rule over humanity. It may not be for more retiring tastes, but the idea of taking such a figure and imbuing him with unambiguous villainy is bold, brave and brilliant.

29. Bizarro

BizarroFIRST APPEARANCE: SUPERBOY #68 (1958) One of the Man of Steel's more interesting enemies, Bizarro is essentially a "mirror world" version of Superman, being the negative component to Supes' good side, taking all of Superman's good traits and displaying a tyrannical opposite. In some versions, he speaks in a mirrored tone - so words mean the opposite of what they do to us - and has a host of mirror powers that make him an extremely dangerous enemy. For instance, he has ice vision instead of heat vision, fire breath instead of ice, enhanced vision that allows him to see behind himself (rather than farther in front), and X-ray vision which only allows him to see through lead (the one thing Superman cannot see through). Similarly, Bizarro is strengthened by green kryptonite, and it is, in fact, blue kryptonite that will weaken him (which, in turn, strengthens Superman). Bizarro was portrayed most prominently in a Season 6 episode of the TV show Smallville (though owing to the more "realistic" tone of the show, he differed significantly from the comic book equivalent).
