12 Most Iconic Battles In Comics

11. Wolverine vs. The Sentinels

Marvel Comics

From: Uncanny X-Men #142

The Chris Claremont/John Byrne run on Uncanny X-Men in the late 1970s/early 1980s produced some of the most important stories in Marvel Comics history, but no visual may be more iconic than Wolverine getting vaporized by a mutant-killing Sentinel in the €œDays of Future Past€ arc.

The groundbreaking storyline, which was adapted for the big screen in 2014, focuses on a dystopian future where mutants are being incarcerated or killed. Some of the surviving mutants, including Wolverine, send Kitty Pryde'€™s mind backwards through time so she can stop the Mystique-led assassination of Senator Robert Kelly,€“ the key moment that led to this dark future timeline.

While €œThe Dark Phoenix Saga€ is typically the more ballyhooed of all the Claremont/Byrne stories, €œDays of Future Past€ is arguably more influential for the way it played with time travel and 'dark futures€'“ tropes that are still frequently used in mainstream comics. As for Wolverine vs. the Sentinel, the cover to Uncanny X-Men #142 promises that €œeveryone dies,€ but witnessing the death of Wolverine €“at the peak of his popularity is still one of the most shocking things Marvel has ever published, even if he was alive again by the end of the issue.
